So you are saying that it has RAM, ROM, a clock, and an I/O controller? As
far as I know all microprocessors require at least this much to function.
You would also need a D/A converter to convert the analog signal from the
light sensors into digital form. 

I'm pretty sure that the OM circuits are integrating analog amplifiers
with variable feedback loops. But I admit to never having viewed the
schematic.
