This means that before you go, you should run at least one
test roll, using the exact equipment you will take to make 100%
certain everything is in working order.

a focal range.

My advice is: Even if you can't use the polarizer on the 28, the ability
to use it on the 50 will be a major asset to your kit. It might work
without any problem. TEST it on the 28, with and without shade before
going. Keep careful notes so you know which shot was w/polarizer &
which w/pola & shade.
