My photos were fogged just a bit in one area, can't remember exactly
where (this was 10 years ago).  But conditions were just like you
describe, viewfinder pointing toward bright light, camera on tripod on
auto, exposure time didn't seem to be that big a factor. There's
probably just a little piece of light baffling material missing or
slightly out of place, I could see that causing a vert line.  Two
choices besides hat:  Get it fixed and the camera tuned up at same
time;  get one of the little < $10 eyepiece shades. They slide into the
hot shoe and fold down over the eyepiece, or up out of the way for
viewing.
