I believe there is a way to mimick the effect of certain filters on b&w
film. However, there is surely more to high quality back and white
photography than scanning a colour shot and clicking "greyscale". This
thread is based on optical performance, and while that is a worthwhile goal,
one might like to reflect that it isn't the *only* goal in photography. I
like black & white, I like 400asa films with some grain, and I like making
my own prints in a darkroom. I even prefer single coated lenses for some
subjects.

IMHO don't get too hung up on filters unless your work requires it (which,
in Gary's case, I believe it does). I recently saw some prints by Margaret
Bourke-White from the mid-1800s. Those of a sensitive disposition might
cringe at the optical performance (flare, aberrations etc), but her work is
rightly regarded as great.

Anybody worrying about the degradation caused by possibly misaligned filters
but aren't using a tripod are wasting their time.
