The mirror up and the diaphragm closing are part of the same movement I 
think. So if there is too much friction in the stop down lever or it is 
slightly bent and hitting something, the aperture won't close all the way and 
the mirror won't go up all the way.  Stop the lens all the way down and see 
what happens.  If the mirror only goes part of the way up and the aperture 
doesn't stop all the way down, then the problem is the stop down lever.
