  Magnum photographer Dennis Stock produced lots of magnificent
flower close-ups using practically every lens in the OM line.
I have his huge coffee table book, and several of the images
in it were shot with the 180/2.8 on extenders (and the 300/4.5,
and even the 500/8!). All superb. Don't be too intimidated
by the " proper " hardware. Allan Rokeach (sp?) also used
the 180 & 200 on extension tubes to produce outstanding 
flower shots.
