[OM] On the road

I would be grateful if anyone could enlighten me with
their experience or knowledge of the Tamron 300mm 2.8
lens. There are currently some for sale at MXV.co.uk:

300 f2.8 LD (IF) SP + 2X and 1.4X conv Exc- £795
300 f2.8 LD/1.4X/filters/lcase Exc+ £700
300 f2.8 SP LD (IF) + Hood + Filters Exc+ £649

This company is based a considerable distance from
where I live - I don't really want to go all
the way there, probably a round trip of six hours or
more, without a little more prior knowledge!

I was recently offered a 300mm 2.8 AF Minolta lens. This coincided with a
share windfall, so for
once money was not so much of a problem. After much
deliberation I decided to pass on it since:

I don't have a Minolta camera which
would involve further expense for a model which would have compatible
focussing speed.

My life is complicated enough with the Oly system. (see later)

In addition there is the thrill of the "chase" which I am sure others,
including Tom Scales, will understand.
Example:

On Saturday I chanced upon an ad in a (not quite)
local bargain pages for a 55mm f1.2 in
Leicester, around an hour or so drive from where I
live. (No price indication, "offers").

Called the number, no response. Didn't think too much more about it until
later the same
afternoon, when the guy called me back (1471 and all
that). It turns out that the lens has some marks on
one of the elements, but "works OK".

Some of you may recall my near miss at Jessops a while
back when I missed a mint version of the same lens for
£90.00 when I failed to grasp the nettle on the day.
Went back next day - sold. )

Kept him talking long enough for him to tell me he
would accept £40.00.

We couldn't work out how I could view the lens
other than driving there to see it, which I decided to
do there and then, after he had rung off. I try to
call him back to let him know, his phone is
busy. By this time it's 4.00pm, so I decide to
set out anyway and call him via the mobile on the way
down - his phone was busy until I was well past
Birmingham heading for the M69, 20 minutes or more
into the journey. By which time I am trying to figure
out how much further I risk going without being able
to contact him and get his address! Get through
eventually. By the time I get to Leicester it's
after 5.00pm, the guy is talking me in via my mobile
phone (hands free of course). Only problem is
Leicester are playing Man Utd and the traffic is a
b***er.

To cut a long story short (this is short?) we agreed a
price of £40.00. The marks do not appear in the view
finder, so I am keeping my finders crossed. The lens
has obviously been well used, but for £40.00? I have
seen these lens advertised in the UK for up to £265.
Two went on E Bay recently for around $400 and $270,
albeit in "mint" condition.

If anyone is interested he also has a black 2n
advertised for £180.00, for which I think he would
take less. Condition pretty good, although no
batteries in it. Perhaps Keith Berry would like to add
to his illicit collection:)

Do I need help?
