: Yes, both versions of the 80/4 Macro must be used on some sort of an
: extension.  Either extension tubes, the auto 65-112 tube, or the
: bellows.  There are two reasons: 1) As you mentioned, it has no
full-travel
: helicoid, only a fine-tuning helicoid; and 2) Both this lens and the
: 135/4.5 have very long, protruding rear elements.

The manual version of the 80/4 has no protruding rear elements and can
directly be mounted on the camera. The 80/4 Auto Macro and the 135/4.5 need
at least 14mm extension (yes, I tried the 135/4.5 on the 14mm Oly tube on an
OM-1 and didn't hear anything crashing when I locked up the mirror ;)

Focusing with such setups can be done with a focusing rail; the Auto lenses
offer the fine-tuning which is handy but not necessary with a rail.
