You are making the assumption that personal funds are going into this
and other similar purchases. You need to recognize that these items are
also rounding out museum collections and corporate displays.

I think that Americans who frequently watch the Antiques Roadshow *can*
believe what they see in such auctions.  In photographica, technological
innovation + rarity + fine condition = money.  21mm lenses in the 1950's
(this one came out in 1959) were rare, innovative and expensive. A
coat-tail effect holds for a lens accessory, also. In the case of the
2.1cm f/4 Nikkor-O in a rangefinder mount, only 600 were produced and
the lens hood was sold seperate. They required an optical viewfinder, of
which only 300 were produced for BOTH the rangefinder and reflex lenses.
One can deduce that there were very few lens hoods produced.
