Dear Zuiks,

Thanks to Olafo for telling us about The Wide Angle page. IMHO,
it's a good site and I look forward to seeing it completed.

I noticed, BTW, that there is no OM-2S advertised. Is this
because no-one in his right mind would want to buy one after
hearing about its vices or because no-one in his right mind
would want to trade one in after discovering its virtues? ;-)

Incidentally, my own OM-2S finally jammed completely. I wound on
the film but couldn't press the shutter release. I tried all the
usual things (battery OK, does lifting the mirror do anything,
is it just the electronic shutter settings that don't work, is
it on the point of tripping, can the Winder be used, etc) before
I gave up. It's obviously a mechanical jam and I'm not going to
try fixing it myself. So, my precious 2S is now languishing in a
back-street workshop that I managed to find today in Jakarta.
The owner, a Mr. Chaing, had a few great big, chunky C*n*n SLRs
in pieces on his work-bench and he seemed to know what he was
doing as he prodded and poked at my comparatively sleek OM-2S.
I've left it with him and will get back to him in a week, to see
how he's going. There's no Oly specialist that I know of here in
Indonesia. In fact, I don't recall ever seeing another OM camera
in this country (lots of Oly compacts, though). If Mr. Chaing
can fix it I'll be very grateful, but I don't hold out a lot of
hope. I'll let you all know what transpires.

Although there more common SLRs, particularly N*k*n and C*n*n,
which would be more sensible for Indonesia (easier to get
components, spares and service), I am committed to the OM
system. It's aesthetically pleasing IMHO (at least, compared to
the clumsy-looking C*n*ns I saw earlier today it is!); I'm used
to using it; it makes me feel very comfortable and in control;
and I already own some lenses, T-32 flash, Winder 2.

If I can't get my 2S fixed (or maybe even if I can), I might get
myself a 2N. I used to have one but I gave it to my son over 14
years ago, when I splashed out on the 2S. I always liked the 2N
which, to me, is an ergonomically superior camera to the 2S but,
of course, doesn't have spot metering. The 2S has always met my
needs perfectly but I was thinking that a 2N might prove more
reliable here (but you can never tell) and at least the
batteries would last longer! I can live without spot metering if
I have to, but can it live without me? ;-)

Peace and goodwill to all,

Ray
