       Doris,

Thought about what you were saying as well as the N.Y.T. IMHO

I think the yuppies will raise their kids like every other generation before them and the old fads will become new fads as they always have. Personally,Its a great experience to shoot slow film on a tripod at night in a fairly well lit town or city. Perhaps because with patience and slowly growing skill and yes luck the photo enthusiest might get that perfect shot worth enlarging to near poster size without much degradation. These days I would consider it dangerous to night shoot in SOME PLACES HERE without having the company of friends, family or the cops. Maybe the Olympus OM2&2n were made in the good old days when the average photo enthusiest for art or for science, would take pictures at nite without the worry of being acused of invasion of privacy, not to mention the chance of being mugged and robbed of your gear or worse. Some of these cameras abilities are nonexistent in todays best cameras. It seems to me Photography has conquered daylight when it comes to film cameras {trial and errorwise that is} but still has a long way to go when it comes to all the dimensions of night and EXISTING LIGHT { AGAIN,trial and errorwise}. When will we be able to do this without a flash and with an average point and shoot?

Its not JUST the lense OR the film. I'ts the capabilities
        of the camera after all!!!
                                      DREAMER?

They just don't make em like they used to...YET... AGAIN!!!

Thanks to P&S cameras, fast films are better than ever, and
the breakthrough emulsion technology at AGFA promises usable,
real ISO's in the 12,800 range, a dream for night-time street
shooters.
Street shooting is at an all-time low, from what I can see,
and not just at night.
There was a recent article on this in the New York Times (maybe
it's still up, and someone can find an URL ?).
Part of it has been the crime figures, but IMO, most of it has to do
with trends in the arts and culture in general. The "coccooning"
so popular with yuppies has also infected the arts world, where the
tendency has been to go into the personal world (Sally Mann would be
a good example, but there are many).
There's plenty of good available light work being done, but not
much being published.
