Many years ago, upon my first visit to the USSR, I attended a
performance of Eugene Onegin at the Marinsky Theatre in Moscow. There
were two overwhelming sensory experiences that evening. The more
important was the splendid ornateness of the production of the opera --
as if the yearning masses were nostalgic for the opulence of the
Czarist regime. But the other overwhelming experience was the smell of
cold cabbage soup that swept over the auditorium as the curtain rose on
the first act. This was assuaged, however, by a large piece of fresh
bread, smothered in black caviar and butter, accompanied by a glass of
Armenian champagne, for one ruble. Caviar was then $18 a kilo!
