That`s true, the minimum photographic range is larger than a face.
So you would need an extension tube (7mm) for "close-up" portraiture.
( Maybe a Close-up lens would also be usable).
The 90 and 100mm lenses are superior in that respect.

Yes, there has been an evolution in the Zuiko lens-line. I guess that
Olympus always tried to improve the performance of the Zuikos.
Compairing the technical data sheet`s from diffrent dates (1978 ~ 1986),
I conclused that there would be 3 different versions of the 2/85.
A person, who worked at Olympus-Germany later told me, that they
distinguish even 5 Versions of that lens over the time :-).
