Sounds like the film slipped off the take-up spindle some time
during your shooting. Probably on the first frame or two. The
counter is driven by the frame advance lever, so it will count up
even if there is no film in the camera. (trust me, I know from
first hand experience) Just recently, there was quite a lengthy
discussion on the "proper" way to load  film into the camera.
You might want to check the archives for that.
