My own favorite trick is to 'waste' one or more of the leading or trailing
frames (00, 0, 37, 38) by taking a picture of a piece of 180ray card with
my name, address and phone number printed on it in large letters...

I even thought of adding the date to the card somehow...

That's what the databack is for!

my filing system resembles an ever growing heap of
cardboard boxes...

I think the most important thing you can do is give each frame a systematic, unique identifier -- especially if you bracket, or do in-camera dupes. Then, at least, you can put your hands on the same image twice!

I start with a two-digit year, a one-character month (1-9, and ABC for October, November, and December), a two character roll sequence ID (AA through ZZ -- someone shoot me if I even need to take more than 26x26 rolls in a month), and a two-digit frame number. I used to only use the year, but recently came close to 626 rolls in a year, so I added the month code.
