[OM] Photo software (was photo quality printers)

Hello All,
There was so much generous response to my query on photo quality printers
that I'm getting fired up here! I've read so much about printers at the
links that some of you provided that I think I might go ahead and get one to
try out before our new house plans are complete. The Epson 1270 is reported
to make such outstanding, and longlived, monochrome prints that I might even
decide not to build a darkroom. That decision is a good way off, but I'm
ready to try this digital darkroom idea--meaning I'll need software. I'm
guessing that I'll hear a lot of good things about Photoshop, but if I'm
going to get a 1270, I'll need something a little less pricy. Also, I'll be
completely new to the process and some of the refinements in the best
software might be lost on me at first. So, do any of you have moderately
priced software to recommend? I don't want to cut too many corners, and if
Photoshop (or something else equally expensive) is the only way to go, I'll
just wait awhile.
Regards,
John
