A focusing rail and stage are to move the camera/lens towards and away from the
subject to assist in focusing.  I just bought a new Bogen/Manfroto tripod the
other day with a new gear head that has the three controls able to be set using
a geared type of control. This is a new product and I have to say that it is
great for macro work.  The smallest adjustments can be made and through the
design it does not need to be tightened or locked after the proper position is
