*The* name with greatest name recognition for light meters today is Gossen,
just as Weston was *the* name 30 and 40 years ago.
Gossen's three major models: Luna-Pro, Luna-Pro SBC, and Luna-Pro F. They
can be found used for approximately $70-140 USD used, depending on which
model, condition and age. New prices for them are high. The straight Luna
Pro has a large operating range with the "SBC" even larger at the low light
end. (If you want a proper exposure for your dark room with the lights
out, use a Luna Pro SBC.) All have a high upper end. It has a built in
diffuser for incident readings (which I recommend learning to use; it's
more accurate). Gossen makes an accessory for spot metering with them
(variable angle attachment). If memory serves me correctly, it can switch
between 7 and 15 degrees.
If you are doing a lot of strobe work, studio or on location, the Luna Pro
F has flash metering built into it, but at some cost to low light range.
Gossen also makes an accessory flash meter attachment for the "SBC" model.
The older Gossens used PX-625 Mercury cells. Fortunately, Gossen makes an
adapter for them to allow using Silver (??) cells.
There are other good meters. Gossen does have competition and am certain
others will post something about them. Before you buy anything, read the
specs on the three Gossen models. They will give you a benchmark for
comparing specs of others.
