This may seem too elementary, but it is still a great book if you can find
it:
Golden Book of Photography. The first copy I ever read was in '61, but info
was accurate and readable.
Best $3 I ever spent!

I might suggest that four softcover books by Canadian photographer
Freeman Patterson are worth considering:

Photography for the joy of it - 1977 - ISBN 0-442-29893-5
Photography of natural things - 1982 - ISBN 0-7706-0022-0
Photography and the art of seeing - 1985 - ISBN - 1-55013-099-4
Photographing the world around you - 1994 - ISBN - 1-55013-590-2

These are all in print and can also be found in used book stores.

Two other books worth considering are:

Color Photography, A Working Manual : Henry Horenstein, 1995 - ISBN
0-316-37316-8
The Negative : Ansel Adams, 1981 - ISBN 0-8212-2186-8
