Agreed. I mentioned in another post my Vivitar Series 1 28-90mm f/2.8-3.5 (at length and ad nauseum) that among its characteristics are paradoxical sharpness - to the point of being unflattering - when stopped down and used with flash, and softness - being one of the most flattering portrait lenses I've ever used when wide open with gentle light.

One thing that's attracted me to some of the Zuikos is the general description of certain lenses as possessing high resolution and moderate contrast. That gives lots of leeway. One can always add contrast and subtract detail, but it doesn't work so well the other way 'round.
