PMFJI, 'cause I'm doing so as delicately as possible... but why is that relevant?

Whatever one pays for items that might be resold, there are numerous expenses involved to take into account. Besides the tangibles like packaging (padding like styrofoam peanuts and bubble wrap can be expensive), the intangibles can be very costly. For example, the risk that a major item turns out to be a complete dud and can't be sold. Or a sold item is damaged in shipping.

It probably isn't well known that according to US Postal Service policy you can insure an item only for its actual value, not its replacement value. That can be interpretted to mean that if a customer pays $150 for a lens, the USPS is obligated to pay only $150 for a lost or destroyed item. Their insurance is not intended to recoup costs for both the buyer and the seller. The seller is expected to cover his losses through some other means of insurance.

It stinks, I know, but I didn't make up the policy.

Lex
