Growing up in central PA, we literally had a covered bridge in our
backyard. Many, many times I've wished that I could go back in time and
photograph the yellow and orange leaves swirling in the water below that
red bridge. The local Mennonites said that bridges were covered there
because the horse teams balked at crossing a wide swift moving stream
without the barnlike atmosphere, and it was used as shelter between the
fields during storms and downpours. As an adult thinking back on it, I
don't know how factual those claims are. For one, horses have been
traversing all manner of waters for far longer than bridges have been
covered. Two, though wide by covered bridge standards, my memory of that
bridge is that it was probably single lane, so I can't envision more than
one (maybe two) wagon teams in there at a time. Man, the photos I could've
taken of the trout that I caught in that stream......... OH well. Seen one,
I guess you've gotten the idea.
