Actually, older camcorders had what was known as OIS (optical image
stabilisation) but these days virtually every camcorder has digital
image stabilisation.  OIS works by altering the light path whereas
digital stabilisation works by selectively ignoring parts of the image
on the CCD.  I would expect the Canon IS use something similar to the
OIS method.  I was always under the impression that Sony developed OIS
and held the patent.  I believe Canon licensed it for their camcorders
so maybe this is just an extension of that license.
