Yes, it is good to know the performance-curve over the apertures.
But I´m still dreaming of a performance pass for a lens, which indicate
for what purpse it was designed, and where`s the compromise.
Here is my guess about the 50mm Zuiko´s:
1.8/50 and 1.4/50 are often used as first lens for general Photography,
and are desiged for even performance on a high level with respect to
most used middle apperture range.
1.2/50 and 1.2/55 are the low level specialists. So they are designed
for best possible wide open performance, with respect to cope high contrast.
I remember a night shooting session, of buildings with chrismas illumination.
I decided to use the 1.8/50 instead of the 1.4/50, because I used a tripod and
won`t need the speed. I`ve just had acquired a new 1.8 MC-lens and thought it
is "superrior" according to some tests.
Then some slide´s showed ugly ghost images of the lights
due to internal reflections -the high contrast problem when you have overexposed
lights at night shooting!
I`ve never noticed any ghost reflections in comparable night shoot`s with my
1.4/50mm.
Maybe this is a matter the 1.4`s design pays more attention to than the
1.8-version
- Who knows?
