All ambient light, either daylight or stagelight. Flash usually is necessary.

For photos of your family at the concert, flash is fine. But using it can be tricky, as others have already mentioned.

Auto flashes are easily fooled in the dark and by high contrast situations. Typically auto flash photos in the dark will be underexposed.

So memorize the appropriate flash setting and f/stop for the approximate distance you expect your family to be from the camera, and use the flash on manual.

A simpler method may be to load the SLR with fast film for ambient light stage photos and use a point and shoot for flash photos of the family. P&S cameras and flash are generally much more reliable at this sort of thing. Nothing wrong with using a good P&S.
