IMO, any strap over time burnishes the surface it contacts.  This even
happens when the strap is being worn away, as it is so much thicker than the
material on the camera.  Come to think of it, even skin wears away the paint
over time.  I think the idea of a sacrificial surface i.e. clear tape on the
camera surface, might be the best solution if applied when the body is
unburnished and replaced regularly.
