I recently bought the Afga Scanscan 50e for about $250.
Optical resolution 2400(v) x 1200 (h) DPI, colour depth 42 bits.
It is a flatbed scanner that also scans 35 mm negatives and slides with
resonable results.
The pictures on my site
(http://members.xoom.com/_XMCM/photovoogt/index.html) are slides scanned at
1200 DPI with the Agfa.
I find the results very acceptable, although dark areas could be better.
The software is very user friendly.
