Good site! Was it because the pictures are ancillary to
the text (editorial) that you didn't need to seek permission from
the building owners to publish it on the web?

One of my favourite buildings here in Melbourne has been ruined.
That was the old Southern Cross Hotel, which was bought by a
developer, beiged in the manner of the time, and left boarded up
when the money ran out. Originally it had been a riot of bright green
zigzags and deep green marble. Put up around 1960, it was postmodern
before the term had been invented, but since it isn't old the
preservation mafia don't grok it in fullness and didn't save it
as they have, e.g., a really appalling railway bridge which "tells
a story."

I really wish I'd photographed the Southern Cross when it was
intact. Undoubtedly someone did. When taken, such photos are for
"private use"; when it comes time to restore a building, no-one will
be arguing the point. There was an amateur who took photos of the
inside of various cinemas, and what he shot has been used by
restorers (e.g. of the Capitol's amazing ceiling).

Don't begrudge him that, he needs some pennies to build the
second tower on the Crown Casino. [This postmodern building
looks like a huge ship moored on the river bank, bereft of one
funnel.]
