The 35-S was made 1955-58 and could be seen as a "cross -over" model for
Olympus from simple viewfinder cameras to rangefinders.
Their first cameras for 35mm film were called "Olympus 35" made from 1948 in
various series. Also in 1955, the "35 V" was released with improved styling
on the top plate, the 35-S added the rangefinder.
Another significant improvement for the lazy man was introduction of a lever
wind that also cocked the shutter! Prior to this you had to wind the film
and then cock the shutter with another lever on the lens.

5 variants of the 35-S (in order of production?) :-
1/2 Seikosha-Rapid shutter, knob rewind, f3.5 or f2.8 lens
3/4 Seikosha-MX shutter, rewind crank, f3.5 or f2.8 lens
5 from 1956 as per 3/4 but f1.9 lens.

Also in 1955, they brought out the Olympus Wide with 35mm f3.5 Zuiko lens
(wide angle lens, hence the name). Before they ceased making the 35-S, the
first use of a built in meter occurred with 1957 Wide E, viewfinder camera
with selenium meter.

As with a lot of makers in the 50's Olympus were still finding their feet
between film formats (120 v 135) and 35mm type (slr v crf). If the shutter
still works and you feel confident to use a camera without a light meter
(either guesstimate; SUNNY day - standard rule of f16, 1/film speed, ie iso
100 film, use 1/100th; OR hand held meter) You may be pleasantly surprised
at the results? Olympus have always been renowned for very good lenses

Using such a straight forward camera where you have to think more about the
exposure (no guiding computer chips, fancy readouts or whizz bizzz ) can
also help you to ponder more on why you are taking a photo and thus what
needs to be there! This may aid your capacity when you use your OM.

What inspired you to purchase this old example?
