Pete,
Is this at the Field Museum? If so, it is along the waterfront. Along
with that, try Lincoln Park, the zoo (free!), the "boardwalk" (more like a
concrete walk) along the water front, the Navy Pier, and Cubs Stadium.
There are huge sculptural works of art and statues near the park, zoo and
museum. I've probably missed a few things; there is so much there.

Get a map of downtown Chicago with an exploded section showing the
waterfront. Park your car (when you find someplace to park it, and have
*money* for that)!  There are not that many places to park around there;
most of the area was developed before automobiles, and that which followed
afterward was built before anyone but the wealthy could afford one. Walk!

The city fathers, in spite of their other failings at times, had great
foresight in preserving nearly the entire waterfront on the lake for
recreational activity. It is a phenomenal area.
