No one is gonna pay $308 for a lens like that, nor would a manufacturer stay

Yep. Should have said "adjusted for 1998 prices." Still, that dollar 
adjustment reflects the fact that the Hoya wasn't exactly a cheapie lens (for 
a 135 mm) when it was introduced. I'm sure it was worth the price recently 
paid.
