I guess it depends on one's shooting style. With my Can-not-an-OM-on gear I tend to work quickly, changing lenses and accessories quickly. While I've never dropped a lens I have fumbled filters and lens caps. I managed to scratch the protective filter on one lens that way. A more solid hit would have cracked the filter. So I keep protective filters on all those lenses.

With the OM gear I work slowly and deliberately so the protective filters probably are less necessary. OTOH, what I have are gin-you-wine OM filters, so they must be okay, right?

Right?  Careful, it is a trick question.  ;)

I fully agree. I used UV/skylight filters on all my lenses for years,
following the advice of people who said: "It helps to protect your
precious lenses from front element damage; filters are cheap to
replace." However, having never damaged a filter I finally saw the
light and stopped using 'em. I think my pictures have improved as a
result.
