Hey and welcome, Frank,

I'm a relative newbie myself (to this list, about 2 months). I've been a photographer for longer than not, and while I shoot Can-not-an-OM-on gear for most assignments, I needed something for a particular project to replace my ailing FTbn. It had to have depth of field preview and mirror lockup.

After studying long and hard at everything available - including poring over the OM list archives - I decided on an OM-1. What the OM-1n offers - more convenience with dedicated flash - I don't really need so when the first good used OM-1 came across my path I grabbed it.

And I've never heard of any particular problems associated with the OM-1 that don't affect every camera of that age - light seals and mirror bumper foam that needs to be replaced, the usual CLA (clean, lube, adjust). Any mechanical winder that's forced (for example, at the end of a roll) can be damaged.

Nearly everyone will tell you that for maximum sharpness you must have mirror lockup to minimize vibration when the shutter fires. While it definitely doesn't hurt, some tests - including those conducted by OM list member Gary Reese - indicate that the OM-1 with mirror lockup may not necessarily fare any better than other OM's. I've read in a column by Popular Photography writer Herbert Keppler (and a longtime OM fan himself) that Olympus officials told him the OM-2 series and later OMs were designed to minimize vibration without needing mirror lockup.

However, mirror lockup was included in the OM-4T (as part of the self timer mechanism), so at some point Olympus recognized that many photographers expect and demand the feature. Other OMs may include some form of mirror lockup too, I'm just not familiar enough with the entire line.

So while I'm thrilled with the performance of mine, I'd suggest not getting terribly hung up on a particular model but do make every effect to get one in the best possible condition at a fair price.

Hope this helps,

Lex Jenkins

Greetings from Arizona,

I'm new to the list, new to photography and new to OM's.
I'm a professional artist/craftman and am lately determined to do my own
product photography. My camera "guru" says an OM-1n is the only camera for
me. He says that the OM-1's often have advance/re-winder problems and
dislikes the OM-2n for no logical reason that I can figure out.
My dilema: OM-1n's are going for unusually big bucks on Ebay lately, while
seemingly nice OM-1's and OM-2n's (w/1:4 or 1:8 zuikos) seem more in my
$150-$250 price range.
Should I hold out for an OM-1n or consider the others ?

Any opinions .... or OM-1,1(n), or 2(n)'s for sale ?

Thanks in advance,

F
