Well, maybe it would help those not already lost to the cause to understand
the steps of an addiction. I came back to film in the fall. Basketball
season, yes it was. My oldest, at the time a seven year old, was playing
basketball. Nice, brightly lit gym, or so I thought. The first game, I
took my digital camera. Uh oh. It was bright to my eyes, but not to the
camera. Blurry shots, slow shutter speeds, just useless and ugly.

This sent me back to my closet to pull my long-neglected, poorly stored,
Olympus equipment out of storage. Remember, the only lens that was
marginally fast was the 50 1.8. Basketball, from the perspective of a 50,
was miserable. So I too discovered the lure of ebay. I hadn't found the
list yet, so I was tempted, oh yes, tempted by the non-zuiko...the cheap
stuff...a quick rush...but it didn't last. I started out with short zooms.
A Soligar. A Vivitar. A Kalimar.....then....then....I bought a Zuiko. The
35-70/4. Nice lens...yeah..yeah...I learned to sell on ebay...dumped the
'bad stuff'. They'll never know...hehehe... Then a 35-70/3.6...ooooh...the
good stuff...but two zooms. Big bucks. The nickel bags, uhmmm, single buys
were killing me.

I needed a score. A big score. A few more little buys to get
ready....then, I found my first big score.

OM-2S, OM-1n, Winder 2, 50/1.8, 28/2.8, 135/3.5, some off-brand stuff.

Wow.....the rush....I was in it. Big time. I wasn't just an occasional
user...er..buyer...I was big time.

But then you can't control it. It's harder and harder to hold back.....it
doesn't do as much as it used to. The buys get bigger...

A big buy. That's what I needed....a big buy....

I found it. A chance encounter. An online ad. It enticed me.....my first
big score.

OM-4T, three OM-1Md bodies, yes, three. oh, and the glass....fast glass.
fancy glass. 18/3.5, 24/2, 35/2, 50/1.4, another 135/3.5, my first
75-150/4...sweet, a 200/4, oh,oh, and a 300/4.5...and my first Motor Drive
(yes, with capitals, Motor Drive). Not just any MD. An MD-2...oh yeah....

But it got worse...the pain, it was unbearable. All I could find was little
purchases. An 85-250. An 85/2. An F280....but it was building,
building...what could I do???

Oh no....there was the lure. A 3Ti. The ultimate OM. Not champagne. Not
black. Charcoal grey....oh, the way the light shone off of it. Like no
other OM.....the siren song. It was too expensive. Way too much. I didn't
NEED it. but, but, but...I had to have it. HAD to. Couldn't hold back.
But I couldn't just buy it. It came with more...an MD-1. An 85/2...and
more....I did it....yes, yes, yes....I did it. I owned the 3Ti....but it's
so nice. I can't actually touch it. It's too pretty.
