What I did was put the slides on the light box, beside the original
grey card also lit as best I could. Then I estimated how far off the
exposure was. Maybe I should have talked in "zones" instead, but I
think in stops. No densitometer, so it's all just estimation by sight.

This kind of judgement is much easier with a grey card than a normal
scene. An ordering is easy to come by and I'm pretty sure the worst
exposures (the off-the-film ones) were about 1/3 stop off. So 1/5
was my idea of "in between about there". Whether the best exposure
(auto 1/250) really was bang on is hard to tell - one has to allow
for the different intensity from the light box and room lighting.
Variation in a slide show is more disturbing than consistent small
exposure errors anyway.
