Uninstall Norton. It's nothing but trouble.

Regarding Windoze crashes, I, too have a Mac and a PC, but went about
the process the opposite of you. I had PCs for years, and got a Mac
(8600/250 MachV, 126mb ram, etc) at the insistence of my brother who
is a Mac devotee. Wow, what a difference. The Mac is more reliable,
I think more intuitive, and certainly simpler to add peripherals, set
up, all the things that have been previously listed.
However, when comparing my 2 PCs, my PC that has Norton Utilities
on it crashes far more frequently than the one that doesn't! Maybe
this is inherent in Norton, so that they can insist that you
need it ('see how many crashes we recovered - what would you have done
without Norton'). I don't run Norton on my Mac, or the other PC for
this reason, and I've had no trouble.

My two cents worth.

Been a Mac user since the Mac Plus. Currently use a Performa 6360 with
450MHz
G3 L2 cache upgrade, 128Mb memory. Works great! Recently built myself a
450MHz , 256Mb PC100 memory, 13,6 Gb HD PC because I use a PC at work.
Thought I could use the experience and that it would be nice to have some of
the PC programs. (Read Alpha Centauri. <g>) Made me a REAL dyed-in-th-wool
Mac devotee. Can't believe the hassle to troubleshoot PC problems. BIOS
adjustments, IRQs and DLLs are a major PITA. Windoze98 (2nd Ed.) is a sad
piece of work compared to Mac OS9.x. Can't believe how prone the PC is to
crashes, or how contrary it can be trying to recover from them, or how often
files become corrupted. Thank the Lord for Norton's Utilities. Files
*rarely*
become corrupted with my Mac. PC Plug and Play installation is a joke
compared to Mac's simple "stick it in, turn it on, watch it self-install and
start using it" approach. No search for "most appropriate drivers." And
Uninstall? Well, it works unless the uninstall file was corrupted during
installation. With Mac you just drag the offending program icon to the
trash.
DOS commands? Why? All I can say is that most Windoze users folk, especially
old DOS users, appreciate the Windows interface and -- few having used any
other operating system -- think it has to be arcane and fragile. Thus they
accept the clumsy Windoze programming as "a necessary evil" to get a simple,
efficient (read Mac-like) interface. Sheesh!
