IMHO I think stained glass windows should be photographed with backlighting. 
Stained glass windows are designed to be viewed by transmitted light. That's 
why they are windows rather than panels.  ;-)  BTW, I have seen stained glass 
windows with gold foil on the face so that interior lighting would reflect a 
design when there is no exterior light to bring out the colors. That would 
preclude frontal lighting if you are after the colored glass design.
