Usually you can tell the age by the filter size. All are very well built. 
They started with 72mm [(very heavy lens) 1960's -70's], dropped to 67mm 
[(lighter weight)  1970's] and dropped further to a 58mm [(lightest) 
1980's]. I don't think there is much optical difference that an end-user 
would be able to distinguish. I use the  58mm S1 lens (70-210 f2.8, 35-70 
f3.5), primarily because they are lighter weight and they take great 
pictures. I am not sure of the 1990's version of the S1. There are only a 
couple of models available for MF. Make sure you check the lens test page 
at http://members.aol.com/olympusom/lenstests/default.htm for additional 
technical info on some of the S1 lenses. My $0.02.
