The Bogen (Manfrotto) tripod you are thinking of is the 3401. I have one and
it is great.  Legs move out two positions if desired.  Comes with 2 center
columns - 1 short, the other long, so if you want to get really close to
ground, it is easy.  Since column also can go horizontal, makes for nice
control.  Quite sturdy/

Of, course, my Benbo will do all that without anything extra.

For a little bit different method (cheaper) take a look at the Velbon
Grounder 550.  Has function much like Slik, without the price.  Got mine for
$40, head removes, nice and light and still get close to ground.

I know what ya mean about the Bogen 3001 as a macro 'pod.  Just doesn't work
well for that.  Their relatively newer model that's a variation of the 3011
or 3021 - I think it's the 3028 - might be better.  It allows mounting the
center post parallel with the ground.
