I'm doing something similar here. I have an MS Access database
(several actually) in which I record the information you mention (title,
description, filename, body/lens, film/aperature/shutter, etc.) When I
scan a new image (from prints, btw... can't afford a negative/slide
scanner right now), I then enter this information into my database.
Then, I use a *neat* program called Access2Web (A2W for short).
A2W allows me to open my access database file (or dBase, Excel, text
file, and even does ODB) and creates both an index page and the
individual pages.
Of course, I had to create the templates for the index and individual
pages, but it wasn't all *that* hard to do. Once the templates are
created, updating my site is a simple matter of typing the info into the
database, clicking an icon to run A2W to create the pages (takes only a
few seconds), and then uploading them to the Net.
No, unfortunately A2W doesn't do zoom and pan. After all, it's a
database and web development application, not a graphics package. I,
too, would like to do that without too much investment, so I'll be
watching to see if anyone has a reasonable (i.e. "cheap") way of doing
that.
Speaking of investment, Access2Web cost me US$89 (or about
4,278.85 Slovakian Koruna for the benefit of everyone else... Grin!).
IMHO, that's a fair bit if you're only going to use it once or twice, but I
use it *alot* so for me it's a *real* bargain! If you're interested in more

I don't create thumbnails of my images. Instead, I use the "width" and
"height" parameters in the HTML "img" tage to define a thumbnail size.
Saves a bit of disk space, and I find it easier to do it that way. Of
course, YMMV.
