All Leica M6, M4-P, M4-2, M5, & later M4's except the painted ones have, as you mentioned, zinc top/bottom plates. M1, 2, 3, earlier M4's, and the new painted M6's have brass top/bottom plates. The "black chrome" and zinc plates were introduced around 1971 with the onset of the M5.

"Brassing" doesn't mean much anymore. When the chromey finish is rubbed off a Canon AE-1 you get a peek at milky plastic resin beneath. If I'm not mistaken there's cast zinc beneath the finish on a Leica. (Nothing wrong with cast zinc, BTW - it's tough stuff.)
