The success of the Chevrolet Corvette in a way was a fluke that turned the
Corvette into an American Institution and marveled by many.

The Corvette's body was originally designed to be made of sheet metal.

During the time frame of production and time crunch for the making of the
molds, the executives at GM decided to go ahead and produce the car with a
fiberglass body. It had something do with the cost of producing the dies
and taking a risk with a car they were not really sure how well the public
would receive it, the car was a two seat sports car with no roof and GM
Executives were not really sure if the car would be well received, and also
not sure if the car would sell.

The cost of producing the dies for the making and tooling of the sheet metal
body is enormous, so GM Executives felt it was a safe risk if the Corvette
flopped. (By the way all proto-type cars are made of fiberglass first,
before the dies are made, from what I have learned.)

Well like anything in life, great things happen unexpectedly. The Corvette
drew unexpected attention because of the fiberglass reinforced body and
became a hit with the public. The rest is history.

In a way it's like the M-1, being renamed the OM-1. Great things do happen
unexpectedly!

Sam....
