[OM] Batteries, batteries, batteries

Subject: [OM] Batteries, batteries, batteries

I may be stirring up another heated controversy, but if so, then let?s get
it on. Every time the subject of batteries comes up, somebody always jumps
in to claim that only silver 76?s should be used in Olys. Must be a
stockholder in Varta or Wolf.

I have three OM-4?s and one OM-4Ti. Two of the OM-4?s are battery eaters.
Do I feed them $4-apiece Varta batteries from Wolf? No way. Instead of
getting ripped off at the Wolf den for $3.99 per single battery, I go
across the street to Target. In the stationery aisle, I get LR44 batteries
(meant for the key ring laser pointers all the kids like) at a buck 99 for
a six-pack. Yeah, that?s right: 6 for $1.99. For the Wolf price of $8 for
two, you get two dozen at Target. For the mathematically challenged,
that?s about 33 cents apiece.

The package says ?LR44?, but the batteries are stamped ?GPA76?. I?ve been
using them for more than a year, and they work perfectly. In fact, they
actually seem to last longer than the high-priced batteries. I?ve got 40
six packs in the freezer. Laser pointers, like most kids? fads, won?t last
long, so I?m stocking up.

The OM-4Ti sits atop the killer Motor Drive 2, but the three OM-4s all have
Winder 2?s. One of my wintertime projects is to wire an OM-4 directly into
the winder, taking current from after the first two AA batteries, which
would be 1.5v.+1.5v.=3v. Since ?volts is volts,? as I understand it, this
should keep the battery gluttons happy for a L-O-N-G time.

If anybody knows why this won?t work, let me know before I trash a
perfectly good OM-4. Otherwise, stay tuned and I?ll report on how it turns
out.
