Lex, you obviously have not driven an Audi quattro yet. ;-) I have owned
both and can emphatically say that a quattro blows a Porsche away in the
snow, even a Carrera 4. The quattro list (an Audi enthusiast mail list I
frequent at www.audifans.com) has many wonderful sagas every winter
about quattros pulling out stuck snowplows, blowing off SUVs etc. They
really are amazing and the more sporting ones handle really well in the
dry too.

the bits together while having great fun driving. >>

They're really not that bad. There were a few questionable years in the
mid-70s (like virtually ever car sold in America) but for the most part
there are very few cars ever made that one could flog to death for over
1/3 million+ trouble free miles than a late 70s/early 80s 911SC. The
only 911s I have owned (in my pre-parenting years) were older at the
time and really weren't "bad cars" per say. In fact aside from lots of
oil (12 qt dry sump) and the requirement for frequent valve adjustments
(did that myself) both my 911s were better overall cars maintenance-wise
than my wife's 1985 Volvo wagon (talk about plastic and falling apart).

In my current "poor California parent mode" I bought my current quattro
(1987 5000 turbo quattro, my 7th Audi) a little over 3 years ago for
$2950.00, run boost mods to get ~225hp, and run it hard (drive it like
you hate it as they say) and it is 175k miles old and still going
strong. I've owned more than a couple cars of various makes and models
over the years (like ~30 or so since 1979...call it a sickness) and
found Porsches and Audis to be the best of the bunch I have owned for
the most part. Wanna talk plastic and parts falling off? My life-long
close friend's 1995 M3 is among the worst I have seen yet (but that
thing is fun to flog I admit...and I do so every chance I get too <g>).

Lest this turn into a SUV thread, the 911 "trunk" really isn't big
enough for luggage for two *and* (obligatory OM content) camera bags ;-)
This, and being broke, is why I drive a quattro instead.
