Printing, don't forget printing.  The best printers can handle more bits
more effectively.

I'm willing to be convinced otherwise, but I tend to disbelieve this. The human eye can only resolve about 2,000 different colors, so PRINTING more bits shouldn't result in any discernible difference.

The only reason I could imagine would be to reduce the "combing" I mentioned in another message, but only if the printer was doing some value range processing.

I've been researching and using high-end printers for three years, and I haven't come across one that would even print a 48 bit TIFF. If I send a 48 bit file to my 50" giclee printer or either of my color lasers, they barf on it!
