Ray, I'd agree with your assessment of the Slik U6000 and most of their 'pods, collectively known as U82UseM. One exception is the U212 Deluxe, which I've used for about four years now with no problems. It's fairly lightweight, holds a reasonable amount (anything I have, the heaviest of which would be a Canon FTbn with a Vivitar 300/5.6 preset, a heavy beast), and with its flip-out leg locks is quick and easy to set up, adjust and take down. It's still a bit wobbly, but pretty strong.

The Bogen/Manfrotto 3001 is comparable, tho' a bit shorter, and would be best with something like the 3265 pistol-grip head for a little addtional height and lots of flexibility. Overall the 3001 is stiffer than the Slik. It's not as quick and easy to set up and adjust tho' due to the stiffish thumbscrew locks. My favorite combo might be one of Velbon's magnesium heads - very large, smooth-turning, well made, much lighter than they appear, and relativeley inexpensive.

But if you're at least 5'10" or taller, eventually you'll wish for a tripod that's taller without needing to lift the centerpost. So go for the slightly larger 3011. I'd swap both my U212 Dlx and 3001 for one 3011.

I'm ashamed to say that I've bought a tripod that doesn't seem to be
very good.
