My studio will be open to the public the next two weekends, September 30 - October 1, and October 7 - 8, from 10am to 5pm.

I'll be demonstrating high-resolution drum scanning, digital enhancement, and giclee printmaking, along with more traditional photographic techniques. I'll also have some 30 large nature photography prints on various media on display, from 20"x16" back-lit prints, up to a 90"x48" panoramic banner -- all handmade in my studio. Light refreshments will be served.

This is part of Portland Open Studios, in which 70 artists of all media in the Portland, Oregon (USA) metropolitan area open their studios to the public and give demonstrations and viewings.

It works by buying a lovely 16-month calendar (September 2000 through December 2001) which contains representative works of each of the artists. You go through the calendar and note the numbers of the artists whose work you particularly admire. (Keep #6 in mind... that's me... :-) Then go to the fold-out map in the back of the calendar, which has all the studios located, and plot your route. The rest is just fun and inspiration, as you meet the artists in their working environments!

Calendar/tickets are $12, available at all four Art Media stores, direct from the artists, or via mail for an extra $3 for postage. A ticket is intended to admit a couple or family, but educators can tour their entire class on one ticket. Artists will not be checking tickets at the door, and are generally happy to have anyone show up, but with the ticket you do get the map, as well as support the Portland area art community. Open Studios is a volunteer, non-profit organization, and any proceeds will be used to make next year's event even better.

I am the only representational photographer on the tour, although there are a couple others who do altered Polaroid transfers, mixed-media incorporating photography, etc. (It is my humble opinion that most photographers could stand a lot more exposure to other media. You'd be amazed that artists in other media spend more time on the art, and less on the tools... :-)

I apologize if this posting is deemed "too commercial," and that this is going to many people outside the Portland area who cannot possibly attend. I hope those who are nearby, or need some excuse to come to Portland, or happen to be in the area at the right time, will consider going on the tour.

My studio is easily accessible from state route 43, south of Lake Oswego or north of I-205. I'll have signs on 43 directing you, or you can call 503.635.3229 or email for specific directions.

I'd be happy to answer any questions, or you can contact Portland Open Studios via the web site link, above.
