On most SLRs the bar or button on which the return mirror rests in the down position appears to be either made of a synthetic material, or coated in one. I've theorized that over time changes in the dimension of the material could affect focusing calibration.

But, if I'm recalling correctly, John H. dispelled these notions not long ago. Apparently focusing screen installation and seating are a more important factor. Correct me if I'm disremembering.
