I have used the 3.5-4.5 for years (purchased mine when they first came out) and
have always been pleased with the results. It is one of the lightest lenses in
the entire line, is very compact and performs well in 'macro' mode which is
important to me. I do a lot of cycle touring, climbing, and backpacking and this
is the one lens I ALWAYS take. Because of it's compact size, 49 mm filter, and
low weight I don't agonize over whether to bring it or not. If I want to go very
light it is often the ONLY lens I take with me. The other 35-70 zooms just don't
compare in this regard. If weight & bulk are not an issue some of the other
lenses are probably well worth considering, but for my purposes this lens is a
'no-brainer' and well worth the extra cost.
