The single digit OMs are more than up to the task, and I doubt that most of the
others are rugged enough. If she wants an SLR my recomendation would be to get
an OM2/OM2n. I abused the hell out of one of these for damn near 20 years of
climbing, cycling and backpacking. My daughter now uses that camera. the 2 is a
rugged easy to use camera and with full access to the OM system it can do
anything most folks would ever need.

If she does not need/want and SLR I can strongly reccomend the XA. The optics
are awsome for a P&S. I have also abused one of these for nearly as long. I use
the orginal XA which gives me focus and exposure control in a very small rugged
package, more importantly after 2o years there are many shots that I could not
tell you ifg they were shot with the OMs or the XA.
